"Oh You Dirty Dog" Fundraiser Dog Wash

Two New Orleans area canine rescue groups, Louisiana Boxer Rescue and Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue, Inc. have teamed together to hold a Dog wash fundraiser. "Oh You Dirty Dog" as the water and shampoo filled event has been dubbed. This wet and wild event will be held on Sunday, October 11, 2009 in the parking lot of Abadie Animal Hospital, located in Harahan, LA. They have sent up a howling round of thanks to Dr. Scott G. Abadie, DVM for his generous offer to use his property for event.

These non profit rescue groups rely on each other many times to help transport dogs from local area animal welfare shelters toward a common goal of rescuing, rehabilitating, providing food, shelter and medical care for abandoned, abused, neglected and sadly too often in this sad economy, owner surrendered dogs. The mission of these groups, run strictly by volunteers is to find new permanent homes for the dogs of their chosen breed. They work with local animal shelters and the LASPCA, joining in their efforts to educate the community about responsible dog ownership.

So Come one, come all our furry four pawed friends (owners welcome on a leash) and get squeaky clean for a good cause! Tell your friends! Make it a family event! It's good clean fun! Print out the full color poster to help them spread the word. What better way to spend a hot fall day!

Dog Cruelty Cases

FOUR more animal cruelty cases of abused Boxers! When does it stop? Are the people committing these crimes against animals being punished?

First there is Chelsea, she was rescued from a shelter in West Monroe Louisiana by a dear friend of Louisiana Boxer Rescue. After making a ten hour round trip in a horrific storm, Chelsea was finally safe and sound in the care of LABR. Chelsea was seen being thrown out of a car, discarded like trash, and was taken to a shelter. In true Boxer fashion, after all she's been through, she still has a sweet personality and wags her little nub when shown attention. You would think she would be fearful of people after what has happened to her but she just wants someone to love her!

Do you have room in your heart and home for this pretty girl? She will happily repay you with doggy kisses forever!

Next are Sir Walter and Ms. Penny who were taken into the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter of Louisiana (shown below) as cruelty cases. Set to be euthanized Louisiana Boxer Rescue volunteers stepped in to save the day! Bathed, fed and given a comfy place to sleep, they are on the road to recovery. They will receive the medical attention necessary for them to heal. The scars left behind from animal cruelty are often deeper on the inside than physically.

Then we have "Popcorn", suitably named because of her bubbly personality and color. This young, emaciated sweet boxer girl was surrendered to the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter by her owner. The woman claimed she was moving! Popcorn is quiet, a little hand shy, no doubt from abuse, but very docile and submissive. She looks to have had several litters. After her medical needs are met and we have nursed her back to health, she will be ready for a new home! She will make someone a lovely addition to the family.

A famous couple was spotted and photographed by the local paparazzi at a Zephyr’s game on Sunday, April 19, 2009 in New Orleans, LA. The couple were trying to enjoy a quiet day “under the radar” of their fans. They were granting no interviews but someone overheard them saying the hamburgers were great and the beer was cold.

Living Large and In Charge!

Oscar was found in rural Louisiana by a telephone repairman wondering around an old house dragging his front leg. He was skin and bones and his foot was badly infected. He asked the people at the house about him and they said "he doesn't belong to us, he's been hanging around here for weeks, we don't feed him but he won't leave".

The repairman contacted us and we agreed to take him. He packed his family in the car and drove Oscar 5 hours to New Orleans. We took him to the vet where we were told the leg was too damaged to save. The leg was amputated and Oscar adjusted very easily.

Well I guess you could say Oscar hit the jackpot! A wonderful Rescue friend of ours saw his picture, flew in from San Francisco and adopted him and flew him home. Just look at our boy Oscar now, living it up in sunny San Francisco with his cute sister Flossie! Way to go Oscar!!

Stories I Could Tell

Sarge was taken into Louisiana Boxer Rescue on Friday, March 13. As you can see, he certainly has stories he could tell us about his life of neglect by his previous owner who gave him up and was promptly issued a citation for neglect. If you are witness to animal abuse or neglect please contact your local humane society, animal shelter, or animal control agency immediately. These agencies have the authority to enforce state and local laws related to the care of animals and will investigate and resolve these situations. They rely on concerned citizens to be their eyes and ears in the community and to report animal suffering.

We will fatten Sarge up and get him back to being a handsome boy. He is an angel, sleeps quietly in his crate and is well behaved with the girls we have socialized him with. Come visit Sarge and the other Boxers available for adoption at Louisiana Boxer Rescue. If you can't adopt, consider volunteering or making a donation.

Shelia Stars in Krewe Of Arfus

Our very own "Duchess Shelia" stars in the 2009 Krewe of Arfus Pet Parade held on Sunday March 8, 2009 held by The friends of Jefferson Animal Shelter, The Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter and The Krewe of Arfus.

Sheila is looking to be adopted. She is deaf but don’t tell her. She gets along with everyone, about 2 years old and sweet! She is energetic and does really well in her crate.

Where will my journey end?

Where will our journey home end? Could this have been the very question on the minds of Sugar and Liza, who we believe to be around 10 months old, suffering from demodec and 1-2 year old emaciated Bristol, when they arrived special delivery to Louisiana Boxer Rescue (LABR) on Friday night March 6, 2009?

After receiving word from a local animal shelter that they were desperate to move these three boxer girls due to overcrowding, arrangements were made and they were quickly transported to LABR for an introduction and evaluation then off to the vet for examinations and much needed medical attention.

This story is typical of most rescue groups on a weekly basis. Animal shelters rely on rescue groups to help ease the overcrowding at their facilities. Rescue Groups rely on volunteers, foster homes and donations and the animals rely on rescue groups for comfort, food and water, care and compassion while they recuperate.

Rescue groups positioned across our nation all have the same mission, saving animals from abuse, abandonment and neglect with a final goal of rehabilitation, re-training and finally an adoption into a forever loving home where their journey home will hopefully end. These efforts cost rescue groups thousands of dollars annually, and rescue groups are often short on means, overburdened and in need of a helping hand, relying on warm hearts for assistance and financial support.

There are a many ways you can help your local rescue group. Volunteer your time and talents, apply to become a foster home, transport dogs to vet visits, walk or play with a dog for a few hours, help coordinate fundraisers and lend a hand at planned events, and most importantly make a tax deductible donation.

You can make a secure online donation to LABR to sponsor these three boxer girls to help us cover necessary medical care so when they are healthy and available for adoption they can soon say…”This is where my journey ends, I’m finally home”.

"GUS" Spotlight on Rescue Success

Meet "Gus", this is him before and after being rescued. He was at a shelter and set to be euthanized unless we could get him out. A Doberman Rescue buddy picked him up for us on a Friday night and we sat in the font yard and looked at this poor creature and wondered if he would survive. He had no muscle mass, no hair, upper respiratory issues and the worst case of demodec ever. Gus is now on the road to recovery and being showered with love and affection from his new family. Fleas Among Us

Springtime brings us a most unwelcome guest, the ever irritating flea. Fleas are bothersome for dogs and their owners, and exposure to fleas can threaten your dog’s health. Fleas can cause uncontrollable scratching, discomfort, skin allergies, anemia and the transmission of tapeworms.

For many dog owners, treating fleas can be a never ending battle, so treating fleas quickly is essential. Fleas begin biting your dog and feeding on its blood within seconds, laying eggs within one to two days at a rate of 40 to 50 per day, which can cause an infestation in your home that could take months to eliminate. A single flea can bite your dog over 400 times in one day! Ouch! Continuous protection will prevent future infestations.

There are several safe and effective natural flea control remedies as well as products available through your veterinarian that you can use to rid your home and dog of fleas. Ask your veterinarian to help you decide which method of treatment is best for your dog.

Controlling fleas early is the key to preventing more serious problems later. Be prepared and take action!
